Botox injections have become one of the most popular entry level treatments for facial aging performed in the United States today. The popularity of BOTOX® can be attributed to its simplicity, safety and dramatic cosmetic effect.
BOTOX® treatment sessions usually only require a 10-15 minute non-surgical office process. A small number of tiny injections are placed into the areas patients desire improvement of moderate to severe frown lines and within days dramatic improvements are noted in the vast majority of patients. Positive changes from BOTOX® treatment can be expected to last up to 4 months.
Although the FDA has only officially approved BOTOX® for treatment of frown lines between the eyes, BOTOX® is widely used around the world for the safe treatment of forehead lines, lateral periorbital laugh lines or “crow’s feet” and some perioral neck aging problems.
BOTOX® works by creating a temporary, limited paralysis of the underlying muscles that cause unattractive facial lines and wrinkles, when placed in the proper location and amounts, cosmetic improvements are usually seen within days with essentially no recovery time from the treatment. As used in my practice, BOTOX is only one component of our method of attacking problem facial wrinkles.
There are two types of undesired facial lines, dynamic and static. Dynamic lines are caused by muscle contraction which BOTOX&trade is designed to effectively treat. Static lines are present even when muscles are at rest. Treatment of static aging lines requires the use of other agents, such as filler products like Restylane, Juvederm or Perlane. Most patients that present to my practice for treatment of facial lines usually receive a combination of BOTOX injections and placement of fillers into the problem areas for optimum results.
